Typhoon Tracy was the second leg of a Group 1 female double act for Moody and Nolen, the pair having combined earlier in the day with the Tony Santic-owned Headway, who got her nose in front where it counted in a head bobbing finish to the Coolmore Ascot Vale Stakes down the straight six.
Headway came with a strong run 200m out to reel in King Pulse (Canny Lad), who looked set for victory when he rolled to the front 200m out. Headway is nothing but game however and she dived at King Pulse right on the line with Shellscrape (Dane Shadow), who made his run with Headway, splitting the pair and only a head off in third.
In winning, Headway becomes the first Group 1 winner for Arrowfield stallion Charge Forward and a very valuable member of the Makybe broodmare band. Moody is hopeful of winning more good races with the three-year-old before she is retired however.
"That was close, I thought she'd put her head down but you're never sure of the angle. She missed in the Slipper but made up for it today," a smiling Moody said, revealing a family trait that is apparent with Headway. Moody trained Headway's dam Chatelaine and the Flying Spur mare resented being struck with the whip. Her daughter is the same Moody revealed.
"It was great plus getting Luke Nolen back on her today as he understands her, you can't get stuck into her otherwise she goes backwards," the trainer explained. "She gives you everything but you have to be prepared to ride her out hands and heels." "She's a gutsy little filly that has never been out of a place at Group level over 1200 metres. She got the luck today and is a hell of a good filly." Bred by Stuart Ramsey, Headway sold for $175,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling sale and she has now won $1,124,888. The win continues an excellent season for Tony Santic and his MAKYBE operation. Three weeks back, MAKYBE bred, sold and part-owned Starspangledbanner took out the Caulfield Guineas.
