Four-time Group 1 winner Starspangledbanner has been retired from racing and will stand his first season at Coolmore in Ireland in 2011. The Aidan O’Brien trained son of Choisir is set to achieve the rare distinction of being crowned a champion sprinter in both Europe and Australia within a calendar year on the back of an outstanding three year old season that has seen him win at Group 1 level in both hemispheres.

Considering his ability, it’s hard to believe the seven-year-old Racing To Win has made just the 26 starts. Injuries however have restricted the grey son of Encosta de Lago’s career but he showed he retained plenty of dash with a second win in the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2) at Rosehill.

Gathering showed he was on track for a big spring campaign with a commanding victory at Randwick on Wednesday. Patinack Farm trainer Jason Coyle is eyeing off Group One targets like the Spring Champion Stakes and a trip south for the Victoria Derby. The Tale Of The Cat colt was having just his fourth start and controlled the speed in the Shamekha Handicap (1550m) before kicking strongly and going on to score his first win.

A powerful chestnut colt shaped in the image of his illustrious sire, Starspangledbanner was burdened with top weight of 58 kg and the extreme outside barrier 15 for this 1200 metre sprint, with neither proving an impediment to his brilliance.

Triple Melbourne Cup winning mare MAKYBE DIVA gave birth this morning to her third foal, a magnificent Bay Encosta De Lago Colt at 1.30am at Segenhoe Stud in the Hunter Valley. It was a cause for double celebration for owner Tony Santic, as later that same morning the Diva’s mother TUGELA delivered a lovely Bay Filly by Redoute’s Choice in the paddock only meters away.

It was an outstanding result for MAKYBE in Sydney at the Australian Easter Yearling Sales this year. On a high after Slipper day with the brilliant run of MAKYBE owned Headway in the Golden Slipper and MAKYBE bred Musket turning in a brilliant Doncaster trial, MAKYBE had two huge days selling its select crop of yearlings at Newmarket. There was cause for celebrations with MAKYBE leading vendor on average, selling eight yearlings at an average of $541,875. This continues on from the trend this season after being named the leading vendor at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and current breeder of the year in Victoria. MAKYBE has come a long way in a short time and it is certainly an exciting place to be. It is a huge achievement for a stud that has only been selling horses under its own name for a couple of seasons.
