Cavity Bay goes close in the Group 2 Fillies Classic at the Valley
Having run into the subsequent Derby winner in Goldrush Guru at Morphettville a week earlier in the Hill Stakes over 1800m, the decision was made to back up Cavity Bay into the 3 Point Motor Fillies Classic on Cox Plate Day at the Valley. Given the fact that the Hill Stakes was won in the fastest running of the race in the past 25 years at least; Tony and Calvin McEvoy were confident that she had come through the race in good order and would put in a good effort.
Taken back from the jump by Mark Zahra, Cavity Bay settled back in the field in what wasn’t an overly strong tempo. Coming around the field as they started into the turn for home, Cavity Bay led the eventual winner in Double Market perfectly into the race. Headed with about 100m to go, Cavity Bay fought hard but had to make do with a valiant second going down by 0.8L.
The second foal out of Denman mare Nooks and Crannies, Cavity Bay has had a profitable campaign that started off with a win the Elvestrom Classic for 2YO at Swan Hill back in June.
With plenty of blacktype still on offer for fillies in the autumn, the farm will be hoping she can go one better.
Nooks and Crannies has a very nice Gold Standard 1YO colt that will be retained to race and a tidy Lucky Vega filly at foot.
