MAKYBE owned HEADWAY stormed into the $3.5 million Golden Slipper with an impressive win in Saturday's $125,000 Group 3 Hyland Sportswear Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
HEADWAY raced a bit closer to the lead than trainer Peter Moody expected. She hit the front very early and showed tremendous will to win to hold off the fast finishing Lovemelikearock (Fastnet Rock)) by a half-neck with the favourite Horizons (Choisir) three-quarters of a length away in third. The gritty win proved she is a versatile bullet-proof two year old. It was a very different style of win but equally as impressive as her previous Listed victory at Caulfield when she stormed down the outside after settling in the back half of the field. The win now makes it three wins on the trot. Peter Moody describes " a remarkable little thing and she's a winner," who " just keeps improving." An elated Chris Munce describes her "as a little beauty."
Down south MAKYBE bred the quinella in the $100,000 Listed 2yo Festival of Racing Stakes at Flemington. Starspangledbanner looked the winner half way down the straight but he was reeled in by Common Interest in a super impressive performance, the two clearing away from the rest of the field.
Lee Freedman's racing manager Sam Pritchard-Gordon commented on Common Interest "He's still in the Slipper so we'll take him home and have a look at him, he might not have enough prizemoney but he may well have another run before that, we'll have a think about it,"
"Craig gave him a lovely ride and travelled in behind them which is a key in these two-year-old races." Common Interest is out of the Snippets mare Common Smytzer, making him a half brother to one of the leading juvenile's of last season Exceedingly Good, also MAKYBE bred. The mare has a full sibling to Exceedingly Good at foot this season.
The MAKYBE two year olds of this season are continuing on their merry dance and Common Interest makes it five stakes horses from a crop of only nine to race, an amazing effort to date. This feat could yet be improved as Headway and Common Interest head toward to the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill in three weeks time.
