First-season sire Purrealist (Tale Of The Cat) has made a bright start at stud and last night at Moonee Valley added his third winner when Anjea (2 f ex Smytzer’s Rose, by Danehill) dashed away from her rivals to win the $30,000 William Cook’s 90th birthday Plate for juveniles over 1000m.
Anjea was very slowly away but in the small field was able to find her way to be only two lengths away before the home turn, unleashing a monster run in the straight to come right away and defeat Danestrom (Elvstroem) by four and a quarter lengths and eased down.
“When they blow the start like that it’s usually the end of the race but she did it nicely so it’s all worked out.” trainer Wayne Hawkes said later. “We bought her at the sale and she failed the scope but all credit to the Santic’s as they sent her to us to train so we’re very grateful they showed some faith in us.”
Team Hawkes paid $110,000 for the half-sister to the good Melbourne winner Anais at the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast and the Santics, who stand Purrealist at their Makybe property in Victoria, decided to send Anjea to the Hawkes to train.
Purrealist now has three city winners from his first crop and is at the head of the first season sires list.
