Blue Sky Stallion Fund 2008 graduate Better Be The One, has been invited by the Dubai Racing Club to contest the US$1m Alquoz Sprint (1000m) at next months Dubai World Cup meeting on March 26.
Purchased by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds and the horses’ former trainer Lee Freedman at the 2008 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Tony Santic’s MAKYBE Stud,
Better Be The One was raced in Australia as Common Interest (pictured), winning 5 races for Freedman, including a victory over Starspangledbanner in the Festival of Racing Stakes at Flemington and the Schweppes Tonic 1000 at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
A name change, gelding and a move to Singapore has proved the right tonic to see the best of Better Be The One, having won 3 of his 4 starts at Kranji, including last Sunday’s $125,000 Kranji Stakes in dominant fashion for Danny Beasley and trainer Michael Freedman and asserting himself as the new star of Singapore racing.
The son of More Than Ready was purchased as part of Blue Sky Thoroughbreds unique Stallion Fund joint venture with John Messara’s Arrowfield Stud. The venture allows Blue Sky clients to co-invest with Arrowfield in a number of high quality colts with the right physical and pedigree attributes to hopefully one day make it as commercial stallions standing at stud.
As well as Better be The One, the joint venture has produced (from just 7 colts raced) group winners Beneteau, Shrapnel and the stakes performed Red Hot Choice, all three of which will one day retire to stud.
“While of course we would have loved to keep Better Be The One a colt, his temperament as a 3yo meant gelding was his only option to fulfil his potential as a racehorse” commented Blue Sky Bloodstock Director Julian Blaxland.
“He has always had a load of ability and we thought after gelding, Singapore would be a good option to try and maximise prizemoney returns to the owners. He’s thrived up there under Michael Freedman’s care and while he hasn’t made a stallion, it looks like he’s turned into the next best thing - a very good racehorse.”
It’s an exciting time for Blue Sky runners with the return of Beneteau to the races next week in Sydney, talented 3yo filly Blink next Friday at Moonee Valley, Shrapnel being aimed at the Oakleigh Plate and 2yo Instinction in the Blue Diamond Prelude Saturday.
The team was represented by impressive 2yo Super Easy in the Karaka Million (4th) and Miss Confidential in the Karaka Mile (3rd).
