PERFECT MATCH FOR ENCOSTA MARES

1 August 2008
Tony Santic's boutique Makybe breeding operation moves into a new phase this spring with the addition of superbly bred Group Three winning sprinter Purrealist as the foundation stallion for one of Victoria's most progressive farms.

'Makybe' is a name associated with top quality racehorses such as Makybe Diva, Arapaho Miss and Exceedingly Good, to name but a few, so it was important for that high standard to be maintained when standing a stallion and in Purrealist every box for potential success has been ticked.

A $700,000 purchase from the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Purrealist is a half-brother by leading shuttle sire Tale of the Cat (USA) to champion miler Racing to Win, a winner of 11 races and $3.3million.

Placed with leading conditioner Danny O'Brien, Purrealist immediately showed glimpses of the family ability and scored easily on debut over 1200 metres at Sandown in April of his two year-old season.

Sent straight to Adelaide for the Group Three SAJC The Jansz, Purrealist ran a bold race for second to ultra-smart filly Gabbidon and was subsequently spelled with a spring preparation in mind.

Purrealist was to have just three more starts, all of them in top company, finishing second in the Listed MRC Vain Stakes, third in the Group Three VRC Danehill Stakes behind outstanding three year-olds Tan Tat de Lago and Scenic Blast, before bowing out with a memorable victory in the Group Three MRC Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Tackling 1400 metres for the first time, Purrealist steamed home to defeat quality colt Marching and would have gone on to the Group One MRC Caulfield Guineas if he had not been struck down with an injury, which ultimately ended his career.

"Purrealist had the perfect action and temperament to win major races and at the time I was convinced he would have given Weekend Hussler a run for his money," said leading jockey Hugh Bowman, who partnered Purrealist at his last two starts.

Retired with a record of two wins and three placings from five starts with prizemoney of $200,650, all those associated with Purrealist were left with the hollow feeling of what might have been.

"Purrealist is undoubtedly the best colt I've trained and I believe he will be an enormous asset to the Victorian breeding industry," said Danny O'Brien.

The key word there is probably 'Victorian' as Purrealist has a pedigree that seems particularly well suited to the genetic landscape down south and the likelihood that he will cover a significant number of mares by champion sire Encosta de Lago, who of course stood in Victoria for the first seven years of his stud career until super stardom called him to the Hunter Valley.

Encosta de Lago is the sire of Purrealist's superstar half-brother Racing to Win, so any mare by him that goes to Purrealist will produce a horse that is a very close genetic relation to Racing to Win.

A strong female family is often seen as a crucial factor in the success of a stallion and Purrealist has that in spades as his dam Surrealist has proven an exceptional producer and was snapped up by Coolmore for $1.6 million when she was offered at public auction in 2006, a clear demonstration of the worth of this family, which is only going to get better.

Surrealist produced a colt by Encosta de Lago last spring and is back in foal to the reigning champion sire once again.

In terms of sireline strength, Purrealist is also a major winner being a son of outstanding Storm Cat sire Tale of the Cat (USA), whose Group One winning son Lion Heart is the leading North American first season sire this year.

Purrealist will stand his debut season at a fee of $8,800 and mares already booked include:

· Calm Smytzer; multiple Group One placed Zabeel mare,

· Fabiarna; stakes-winning Lion Hunter mare,

· Gold Anthem; dam of stakes-placed Gold Chant from the Circles of Gold family,

· It's Who Deanie; Group placed mare, first foal made $500,000,

· Mutribah (USA); Silver Hawk mare dam of stakes-winner Mutate,

· Warm Smytzer; stakes-winning Zabeel mare,

· Smytzer's Thunder; dam of the very promising stakes-placed • Lucky Thunder,

· Dea; Dual Group Three winner,

· Bardego; Group Three winning juvenile,

· Victory River; dam of Group One Oakleigh Plate winner,

· Reactive,

· And the list goes on...
