MAKYBE DIVA’s Relation Makes Her Mark in the Ring

31 May 2010

MAKYBE DIVA has certainly left her mark in the sale ring in the last couple of years with her Galileo colt and her Fusaichi Pegasus filly reaching million dollar price tags. But MAKYBE DIVA's dam Tugela  has also left a firm hoof print in the sale ring in recent times.

On the first day of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Bakarje Diva, by Redoute's Choice out of Tugela, went through the ring as a late inclusion in the supplementary catalogue.

A wonderful looking mare, she placed on the Gold Coast this season and while it is plain to see she was no Makybe Diva on the race track her pedigree has immense appeal.

Her full brother was sold to Woodlands for $2.5 million to the Ingham family's Woodlands Stud at the 2005 Inglis Easter Sales for a record sum. He would go on to race as Musket (pictured) commencing his career with John Hawkes and later with Peter Snowden. He proved his class in capturing the Gr 2 win in the Shannon Stakes beating Gr 1 winners Bank Robber, Black Piranha and Ice Chariot amassing career prize money just shy of $300,000.

Last year at the Inglis Easter yearling sales Bakarje Diva and Musket's brother was knocked down to Patinack Farm for $1.2M. This unraced colt now aged two may hold the key to why Patinack were so keen to purchase Bakarje Diva on the Gold Coast.

Under the care of John Hawkes there is a whisper from the Hawkes' stable that the colt is indeed special and as we all know this stable is certainly no stranger to a good horse. With Patinack buying the full sister at the Magic Millions yesterday for $600,000 perhaps you could say the money did the talking.

Ben Lawrence, Patinack Farm's Stud Manager was on hand to do the bidding on behalf of Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm. "She's from a lovely family with a lovely pedigree and it's not a family Patinack have a lot of. We bought the full brother at Easter last year and we are very happy with him," said Lawrence.

MAKYBE sent Tugela to Street Cry last season and a decision has yet to be made on where she will go for the 2010 season.  "We have a full sister to Musket, Bakarje Diva and the unraced colt at MAKYBE and we're looking forward to preparing her for the sales next year," said Scott Holcombe, MAKYBE's Stud Manager.
