WHOBEGOTYOU TOO GOOD

13 September 2009

Whobegotyou (Street Cry also sire of MAKYBE's Street Hero) has not visited the winners circle since his win in the Moonee Valley Vase last October and while he has had his injury problems, it had been eight winless starts prior to yesterday's win the $505,000 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (formerly Feehan Stakes).

To be fair, the Mark Kavanagh trainee has been racing at the highest level and yesterday, with the benefit of two fittening runs, the application of blinkers and great ride by Damien Oliver who was awake to the fact the field in the Feehan Stakes had crawled through the first half of the race and got going on the back of Mic Mac (Statue Of Liberty) at the 600m mark, Whobegotyou was dominant over the last 600m S i n g a p o r e - t r a i n e d Jolie's Shinju (Jolie's Halo) had been allowed to set pedestrian fractions, resulting in a sprint home and with Whobegotyou gathering momentum into the straight, he readily ran past Mic Mac to go on score a strong win.

Mic Mac ran well but possibly finds 1600m at this level his limit while Jolie's Shinju ran a terrific race, holding on for third. The final fractions showed why none of the backmarkers were able to make ground. The final 600m was run in 33 and change, so under the circumstances the runs of Majestical (Montjeu) and El Segundo (Pins) were full of merit.

"The blinkers went on to tune him up," a smiling Mark Kavanagh explained later. "We always had them up our sleeve for the run into the Cox Plate but we decided to use them this time. "He hadn't won for a while before today so we decided to put them on him and got the result. I couldn't believe how slow they went, the blinkers got him into a nice position then he just stalked them from there," Kavanagh continued, confirming Whobegotyou would have one more run before the Cox Plate but was unsure which race that would be for the four-year-old son of Street Cry (Ire).

Damien Oliver was suitably impressed. "The blinkers switched him on a lotmore and coming back to Moonee Valley, he really appreciates the track here and he was back to his best today. "They dawdled through the first 1000m, we expected the Singapore mare to go a bit quicker than that but she really had it all to herself. We quickened up from the 600m and the race was on in earnest then. You know he has no problem with the 2000m and he just loves Moonee Valley."

Trainer Greg Eurell was far from disappointed with Mic Mac. "Damien was right on Danny's back and Whoebegotyou got a cart into it but mit's no disgrace to be beaten by Whobegotyou.'
